Quick Start

Detailed instructions for downloading and installing Apple's QuickTime-4 software.

In order to play the video clips on WebcastingTV, you must download and install the RealPlayer-7, Windows Media Player or QuickTime-4.

If you think you have already installed one of these viewers, press the test button below.

Currently, WebcastingTV uses several "viewing" software packages.  This page describes how to download and install QuickTime-4.  It is FREE software available from Apple's website.  Just press here for the "FREE QuickTime Player".  Follow the instructions for downloading the software.  Some download tips are:

  1. You DON'T need the "QuickTime Pro" version to access any of the video on WebcastingTV.  Just "free" player will do fine.
  2. You MUST enter your name and email in the box in the left column toward the bottom of the page, before you download.  You can skip the "Apple eNews" and "QuickTime News" unless you REALLY want it.
  3. Be careful to select the proper Operating System (OS) .  A Mac version won't work on a PC, and visa versa.
  4. Press the "Download" bar at the bottom of the page.  Make sure you select "save to disk" when the "File Download" dialog box appears.  Note where you saved it so that you can run the install.
  5. Open the folder where the downloaded file was saved and double click on it.  QuickTime 4 Setup will start.
  6. Step through the "next" and "accept" buttons, and when prompted with "Choose Installer Type" any of the versions will work.  We recommend that you stay with the "minimum" version since it supports all of the operation you will need on WebcastingTV.
  7. Make sure you install the Plugins for both Netscape and Internet Explorer.
  8. Enter you name in the "registration" page.  You don't need to put anything in the "organization" field, and since you are not buying the "pro" version of QT-4, you don't need to enter anything in the "registration number" field.
  9. If presented with a choice for "use HTTP proxy" most people won't need that unless your are behind a firewall on a company network.  Consult with your network supervisor.
  10. Continue on to the download.  (note: The first file you downloaded already was just the "installer" application.  Now you will download the real software.)  The "minimum" version of QT-4 is about 3.5 megs.
  11. The installer will conclude by creating a QuickTime folder, and prompting you to look at the "readme" file (skip it), and a choice to view the sample movie (do it as a test).   The install should conclude by launching the viewer with a test file.  If you are unsure, go the the "QuickTime Test" page.

After you have let the software install itself, all you need to do is select one of the "streaming speeds" that are available on each clip.  You will need to know the modem speed (bits per second) of your connection to the internet.  Most people have a "dial-up" account with a modem that is either 28.8k (28,800 bits per second) or a 56k (56,000 bits per second).   More and more people are installing "cable" modems or "DSL" connections, and if you have one of these, you can select the highest stream rate.

A few suggestions for easy viewing are:

  1. Place the viewer in a corner of your screen so that you can continue to use your other applications.  Moving it while it is running won't effect the operation of the viewer.
  2. The volume level is adjusted by rotating the wheel next to speaker icon.
  3. It is suggested that the size of your screen be kept on "Original Size" rather than enlarging it since the image quality of the video which is streaming has been optimized for the original size.  Enlarging the screen will not increase the resolution.

If you experience any difficulty installing QuickTime, go to the FAQ page here at WebcastingTV, or explore the Support section at Apple.  If you really get stuck, contact our tech support at Help@WebcastingTV.com.

After Installing the software, whenever you would like to watch a clip, if you see these download speed buttons, select the maximum speed your modem can handle.

When you select a video to watch, the viewing window will appear outside of your browser.  After a few seconds of "buffering" the video will start to play.

While the video viewer is playing, you can still browse the internet with Internet Explorer or Netscape.  You can continue to use any normal Windows or Macintosh application as well, such as a word processor.
